Delicious vegetarian eats at the idyllic Hollyhock Cafe in Richmond’s Terrace Gardens

I first noticed the Hollyhock Cafe as I whizzed past it on the top deck of a bus. Halfway up the hill, nestled among towering evergreen trees, I saw what looked like a tiny cottage illuminated by twinkling fairy lights.

Located in the heart of Richmond’s picturesque Terrace Gardens, the Hollyhock Cafe lives up to the romantic vision I had from the bus that day.

As you weave your way down the gardens’ sloping lawns, past the tropical conservatory and rose garden, this magical little place is a delight to spot. The Hollyhock Cafe really does look like a fairytale cottage, with its crooked wooden terrace, scampering squirrels and those sparkling lights that alerted me to its presence.

Regardless of the season, the Cafe is the perfect setting for a lazy Saturday. In the summer months, you can sit outside enjoying the sun, the beautiful gardens and the view of the River Thames. In the winter you can snuggle inside under the high, beamed ceilings, among a mountain of cushions peeping out at the world through paned windows. Or you can take a blanket and a hot water bottle from the basket by the door and brave the elements on the terrace.

Aside from its idyllic setting, what makes this place truly special is the produce it serves. The Cafe sells delicious vegetarian, organic and fairtrade food and drink, from coffees and cakes to soups and light lunches.

To work off the cakes, I’d recommend a hike up Richmond Hill, a stroll round Richmond Park or a wander along the Thames to Petersham nurseries.

In true fairytale style, the cafe is open during daylight hours, closing at dusk.
